Many of us have read the Regional plan and seen the vision for the future but how will it be implemented? What are the challenges that lay ahead? How have other models around the world worked? Gary Lawrence, Principal Sustainability Consultant, Arup, Seattle. Gary Lawrence has previously held positions as the Seattle, Washington USA’s Planning Director, where he guided the development and adoption of the City’s Comprehensive Plan – “Toward A Sustainable Seattle”. Gary was the founding member of the non-profit organization Sustainable Seattle, winner of the United Nation’s award for the World’s Best Community-based Sustainability Indicators and he was founder and Director of the University of Washington’s Centre for Sustainable Communities, a research and education center on sustainable urban development. Gary was the founder and President of Sustainable Strategies & Solutions, Inc., a consulting firm helping business, government and community organisations overcome conceptual, informational and institutional barriers to achieving more sustainable outcomes. Gary will be sharing his experience on what he has seen work and why.
Chris Johnson, Executive Director, Urban Renewal, Dept of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources (NSW) Sydney is experiencing rapid growth, with a further 1 to 1.4 million new residents anticipated over the next 25 to 30 years. The Metropolitan Strategy will consider the balance between Greenfields and urban renewal, and whether the lower hunter and Sydney to Canberra corridor should accommodate some of Sydney's growth. Urban growth choices will be fundamental in positioning the city to address some key challenges. Come along to hear Chris speak about some of the challenges and solutions that have been implemented with the NSW Metropolitan Strategy.
