Ethics in Environmental Decision Making
Ethics in Environmental Decision Making
Date:
31 July 2008 Environmental practice is fraught with ethical dilemmas in balancing the demands of clients, the expectations of agencies and responsibilities towards the environment, and to present facts objectively. Situations arise where individuals perceive that the best long-term interest of the environment may be in conflict with those of other individuals, organisations or employers, with potential consequences for career or credibility. Environmental practice is fraught with ethical dilemmas in balancing the demands of clients, the expectations of agencies and responsibilities towards the environment, and to present facts objectively. Situations arise where individuals perceive that the best long-term interest of the environment may be in conflict with those of other individuals, organisations or employers, with potential consequences for career or credibility. The EIANZ Code of Ethics is a broad guideline, but is open to wide interpretation in its application to various disciplines and organisations. The Certified Environmental Practitioner scheme places emphasis on understanding and practicing environmental ethics as important pre-requisites, and the first three rounds of interviews have indicated a need for seminars to explore these issues in greater depth. As part of its commitment to Continuing Professional Development and wider consideration of ethical issues, EIANZ-SEQ is holding a forum in Brisbane: “Ethics in Environmental Decision-making”. The forum will comprise three experienced speakers presenting different aspects of practical ethics, followed by a forum discussion by panelists with varying perspectives: Speakers:Alan Chenoweth, Chenoweth Environmental Planning & Landscape Architecture P/L: “Ethical challenges in environmental practice”, and also the Certified Environmental Practitioner scheme.Dr Trevor Jordan, Senior Lecturer in Applied Ethics, School of Humanities & Human Services, at Queensland University of Technology: “Ethics as they apply to professional values and associations”.Dr Donna McAuliffe, Senior Lecturer in the School of Human Services, Griffith University.
