Green is the new Black - the fashion of Corporate Sustainability Date: Thursday 21 June 2007

Hotel, Cnr Ann and Roma Street, Brisbane Business and industry has a crucial role to play in helping Australia to become more sustainable and competitive. As a result, many Australian organisations and industries are responding by reducing their environmental impacts and risks through improved environmental management practices and efficient use of natural resources. Our speakers will give an insight into why Corporate Sustainability is important to practice and not just preach. ENERGEX is one such organisation that will undertake a critical assessment of their corporate sustainability in the next 12 months to ensure they continue to meet the expectations of the community into the future. ENERGEX is an original member of the Greenhouse Challenge and has highlighted for many years the benefits of green energy, energy efficiency measures demand management, tree planting and carbon offset programs and the benefits of solar panels and photovoltaic systems. Terry was appointed CEO of ENERGEX on 8 January 2007.
Terry has more than 25 years Terry has an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering, a Masters Degree in Engineering, and a Degree in Economics and has undertaken management studies at the Australian Graduate School of Management and most recently at the Michigan Business School in the USA. He is also a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Dr Andrew Griffiths is an Associate Professor in the UQ Business School and is the academic director of the Corporate Sustainability executive program in the school. Andrew’s areas of research include: business strategy and climate change, corporate sustainability strategy and change. He has co-authored three books, The Sustainable Corporation (1998) and Sustainability (2000) Organisational Change for Sustainability (2006)). Andrew is the recipient of the UQ Foundation Research Excellence Award, the UQ Business School Research Excellence Award, and the Academy of Management, Best Paper Award (Organisations and Natural Environment Interest Group).
Cathy Crawley, Principal, Arup Sustainability Cathy is a Principal in Arup and is the Australasian practice’s national Business Unit Leader for Environment and Sustainability Services. She been responsible for the successful growth of Arup Sustainability in Brisbane and nationally. Within Arup she takes a lead representing Australia on matters of global sustainability (including Arup’s own corporate reporting), Cathy has developed Arup’s own Corporate Sustainability Strategy for Australasia and is responsible for leading its implementation across the business. Externally, she is currently a member of Brisbane City Council’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, is incoming Chair of ACEA’s Sustainability Committee and in 2004 won the National Association of Women in Construction’s Award for Sustainability. As project manager of a sustainability study into rating tools for Brisbane City Council, last year Cathy and her team won a Planning Institute of Australia award.
